Spotify – 5 Reasons not to Join

Spotify is a new music service that has been very popular in Europe and has just recently made it’s debut in the US. It markets itself as a new way of listening to music by allowing you to listen to “any artist” and “any album” with millions of tracks online that you can instantly stream. It’s main competitor is of course the music streaming giant Pandora. I decided to take Spotify for a spin to see if it was all it was cracked up to be, and not even 24 hours later, I already cancelled my account. Here are some objective reasons of why I didn’t like the service.

1) It doesn’t remember your actions between computers. I initially installed it on my work computer. I started listening to some songs, and I “starred” several songs. Once I got home and got it installed on my home computer I expected to find the songs that I had starred. Nope, they were nowhere to be found. Despite their marketing of being able to take your music anywhere and listen to it anytime, you can’t set it up on multiple computer and have it sync your library between them. I thought it was supposed to be some sort of cloud music. I guess I was wrong.

2) In order to play the music on your iPhone you have to pay for the premium service at $9.99 a month. That’s pretty expensive when iTunes already lets me put music on my device that I can listen to offline for FREE. It is laughable to think that they want people to pay for something they can already do for free.

3) It’s OK for finding music that you WANT to find, but it doesn’t have a good way of discovering new music. You can search for music for a certain genre, but in order to listen to it you have to select the songs and then add them to your queue. Of course, everytime you search it brings you to the top of the list with songs ordered by popularity, so it’s incredibly hard to discover songs further down the list.

4) It’s not brainless. That’s one thing I like about Pandora. I can just listen to music and I don’t have to think about it. With Spotify, it’s much more of a social music thing that they are going for, and I just can’t set it up in the background to play music while I work. I constantly have to go back to it and find new songs to add to my queue.

5) It doesn’t import iTunes smart playlists. Nearly all of my iTunes playlist are smart ones that are dynamically generated by how much I like them, or when they were added to my library, or how many times I’ve played them. When I went to import my iTunes libraries, it left all of the smart playlists out, so it made it unusable. That was the final straw that made me go and cancel my account.

Nice try Spotify, I actually don’t know why Europeans like you so much.

Have you had the chance to try Spotify? Let me know what you thought about it.

Interesting Night At Othello

For my birthday Courtney got us tickets to see Othello in the Space Theater at the Denver Center of Performing Arts. The Space Theater is one of my favorites because it’s so small. She paid $18 for each ticket and we were only three rows from the stage. It’s just nice to be so close to the actors and doesn’t have the detached feel of the bigger theaters.

Cake Balls

I was introduced to a new food this weekend that I refer to as ‘Cake Balls’. Courtney had a baby shower, and one of the girls made a cake for it. The cake was cut in a shape, and she took the scraps of the cake that were left after cutting the shape, and made them into cake balls. She crumbled up the cake pieces, mixed them with frosting, formed them into a little ball, then dipped them in white chocolate. She then put the cake balls all around the cake as a decorative border.

YUMMY!!!

Hidden Symbols in Angels and Demons

When I went and saw Angels and Demons a few weeks ago, I noticed some hidded dots and symbols throughout the movie. Most of them showed up towards the climax of the movie and they would appear in a flash of light, or a quick camera pan. After the movie was over I asked my friends if any of them had seen it, and they thought I was crazy.

I searched around on the internet, and about all I could find was a question on Yahoo answers that was talking about the same thing. There were about 20 other people that had noticed the same thing, but we couldn’t make heads or tales out of it.

I forgot about it for a couple of weeks, and tried looking into it yesterday to see if there was any new information about it. I was alarmed to see that the question in Yahoo answers had been deleted, and I couldn’t find anywhere on the internet where it was being talked about.

If anyone has any info about this, can you enlighten me?

Belly Button Facsination

Courtney has now become infatuated with her belly button. It’s really odd… she will sit there in front of the mirror and just poke at it, then she will turn to me and say “It’s almost ready to invert!” It’s like some kind of strange milestone for her.

Bloody H**L

I was woken up in the middle of the night to Courtney yelling “bloody h**l” and limping around the room trying to massage out her leg cramp. She’s moved into the cramping stages of pregnancy and we can feel the baby moving now. I hold my hand on her stomach as we pray before going to bed each night. The baby has already stolen my heart <3

Baby Crib

Yesterday I put together the baby’s crib. It’s true… it’s happening to me. I’m turning into a dad. I only used the wrong bolts twice, so I give myself an A! Renick was a nice help too and Courtney went and got me Dairy Queen for desert.

Woohoo!!!

Woohoo!!! The baseball bat inside the crib is NOT for beating the baby.

DNC Volunteer Report

The DNC went really well. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. It was really neat because the same group of officers hung out at our location for several hours every night which allowed me to form some (all too brief) friendships with them. Really all I did was sit and hang out with them… joke with them, watch TV, listen to their stories, and just get to know them on a personal level. I have never really had a chance to do that with cops before, so that was one of the biggest blessings for me.

They told us that the last things cops want is to be preached to, so the way I approached them usually was just to tell them a little bit of my testimony and left it at that. Most of them didn’t inquire any further, but all of them were very touched that we volunteered so many hours just to serve and support them. It was a little sad when we said our final goodbyes this morning.
